Join us for an Artist Talk and flag-raising ceremony with visiting artist Cristina Victor and the University of Montana’s Montana Museum of Art and Culture @ The Fairgrounds from 4-5 pm on Wednesday, July 21. This will be followed by a Happy Hour with light food and drink and a chance to meet the artist and mingle. Partners for this event are Missoula Parks & Recreation and the Open AIR program.
The eight flags bound for the fairground’s new flag plaza were designed by children participating in the park department’s summer camps in 2020. Kids learned all about flags and designed their own with Cristina Victor, an Open AIR Resident Artist, and flag designer, during last summer’s camps at the museum.
Their designs were manufactured as real flags and will be raised at the fairgrounds ahead of this summer’s fair. An exhibition of 12 other flags designed by the kids will run through Friday, July 30, in the lobby of UM’s Performing Arts and Radio/TV Center. After the displays are over, the flag plaza will be dedicated for use by state and tribal flags, and all the student flags will join the museum’s Permanent Collection.
